How to setup to use ATLAS software for GEM

In order to run the ATLAS suite you will need your own username on the VMS computer system at ISIS. If you do not already have a username then you can obtain one by sending a completed application form to ISIS computer support. The application form may be obtained either from the computer group's web page or from one of the following links: postscript file, pdf file, Word file.

This page describes how to set up your username on the VMS computer with the specific purpose of running ATLAS software on GEM data. (It will still be necessary to run @lad$disk:[ladmgr.progs]atlas_logs before running ATLAS - your login.com is probably the best place to do this.)

1. Create a subdirectory to be used when analysing GEM data by typing create/dir [abc01.gem] (where abc01 represents your username).

2. Edit your login.com file so that it includes the following 2 lines:

$ gdir:==@lad$disk:[ladmgr.setup]gem_dir
$ @lad$disk:[ladmgr.progs]atlas_logs

3. Then, when you want to run ATLAS with GEM data, first type gdir (this will only work if you have logged in subsequent to step 2. - log out and log in again if necessary). This will set the default directory to be the one created under 1. above and will also setup the various parameters required for running ATLAS on GEM data. It should also enable you to run the Open Genie program GEMSQRAW from your own account.

(A similar procedure may be used to setup for running ATLAS with data from other instruments, such as SLS, LAD etcetera.)

GEM User Rights

You will need to have GEM USER rights set up for your username. You can check whether you have such rights by logging on to ISISA (e.g. type SET HOST ISISA) and typing RIGHTS. If you do not have GEM user rights, please send an e-mail to support@isise.rl.ac.uk and ask for these rights.

Paging File Quota

If you have problems running ATLAS on GEM data, then one possible cause may be that you have an inadequate paging file quota (due to the large quantities of data generated by GEM). You can determine your current paging file quota by use of this command; sh proc/quo. Send an e-mail to support@isise.rl.ac.uk to ask for your paging file quota to be increased. I recommend a value of 400,000 blocks, although the support staff may be reluctant to give you such a large quota!
