6.2 Candle-stick

The candle-stick is a simple device designed to support sample cans in the beam. It is normally used for simple room temperature use and for plate and/or aligned samples. Three handles hold it in place in a vacuum flange which in turn fits into the top of the LAD sample tank.

A setup jig is normally used to ensure that the sample is at the right height (and orientation if necessary). When the candle-stick is fitted in the setup jig the position of the centre of the beam corresponds to the centre of the aluminium alignment block. The alignment block is 2cm wide and thus the beam centre is 1cm from both top and bottom of the block.

For aligned samples, the top flange of the sample tank is marked with the angle to the incident beam and has a spigot for locating the candle-stick - the holes on the candle-stick correspond to the plate perpendicular to the beam. For other angles the spigot has to be removed.
