4.2 The computing system on LAD |
The instrument computer on LAD is a VAXstation 3200. The LAD instrument cabin contains a workstation which is directly connected to this computer. There are also two terminals, one of which is connected directly to the computer, whilst the other is connected to a terminal server. There is also a terminal in the LAD sample area which is intended primarily for interacting with sample environment equipment. It is intended that the instrument normally be controlled from the username LAD. The password for this username is routinely set to be L1QU1DS (i.e. the word liquids with the letter i replaced by the number 1). The username LAD is set up so that logging on to the workstation in the cabin automatically creates windows assigned to the various tasks needed in controlling the instrument (DASHBOARD, GENIE, CONTROL). If any of these workstation windows become logged out then they may be restarted from the Session Manager window (its icon shows a key) by selecting the LAD menu.
LAD users are permitted to use the LAD username to analyse data if they wish. It is recommended to do this within your own sub-directory (which can be created by the command CREATE/DIR [LAD.MY_NAME] ). However, it must be understood that the needs of the experiment currently being performed on LAD will always be given first priority. Consequently files will be deleted at some stage and log on sessions may be stopped if necessary.
To Toggle Between Text and Graphics: Control F6
To Reset the Terminal if it Locks Up:
Press SETUP key
Select DIAGNOSTIC, then select FACTORY RESET and press return
Wait
Return to vax prompt - it may be necessary to type Control-Q (or Hold Screen) to get the prompt back
Type @g_f:falco_setup
It is possible for the user to re-boot the LAD computer, although this should only be done after making very sure that it is really necessary. A re-boot may be initiated by logging on to the LAD computer with the username LAD_BOOT. The password for this username is normally the same as for the LAD username (see section 4.2). A re-boot may be necessary if all terminals and sessions logged on to the computer stop responding (it is definitely not necessary if only one terminal stops responding). A re-boot may also be necessary if the CAMAC software crashes and does not re-start (see section 6.7.1). The re-boot will log out all terminals and other sessions logged on to the computer and hence will disrupt the work of anyone else who is using the computer. Users should be aware that a re-boot will interrupt the control and logging of sample environment parameters.
