LAD has special shielding inserts for use in the sample tank. These are made of crispy-mix (B4C boron carbide granules plus a small amount of resin on a wire mesh frame) and contain windows for each of the detector banks. They must be removed when any furnace or large diameter piece of sample environment equipment (e.g. orange cryostat) is used. It is very important to position them correctly when replacing them in the sample tank!
