9. Glossary of Terms

ATLAS Stands for 'Analysis of Time-of-Flight Diffraction Data from Liquid and Amorphous Samples' - this is the suite of programs used to fully reduce and correct structure factor data from LAD.
CCR Closed Cycle Refrigerator - this can cool the sample to temperatures from ~15K to room temperature.
FEM Stands for ‘Front End Mini’ - this term means the computer which runs the instrument.
GENIE The standard ISIS program for the display and manipulation of spectra.
ISIS This is not an acronym - but was an Egyptian goddess!
LAD Liquids and Amorphous Diffractometer.
LOG file A computer file which contains a record of sample environment parameters, such as temperature, during a run.
RAW file A computer file which contains the accumulated neutron counts for a particular run, together with a number of other parameters.
SAV file A computer file which is essentially the same as a RAW file, except that it is saved at some point in time before the end of the run.
SE Sample Environment.
