1. The purpose of this manual

This manual is written to provide as much as possible of the information needed by a researcher performing an experiment on the Liquids and Amorphous Diffractometer LAD [1]. Detailed instructions are given to enable the experimenter to operate without assistance all of the pieces of equipment which are routinely in use on LAD and to perform all of the practical operations which they are likely to need. All the computer commands and programs needed whilst performing an experiment are also described. However, the manual does not contain information on how to use the ATLAS suite to perform a full analysis of the data after the completion of the experiment since this information is given elsewhere [2,3]. Similarly the manual does not explain how to use the GENIE spectrum display and manipulation program since there is already an extensive manual for this program. Furthermore the manual is not intended to be a source of information about the VMS computer operating system (unlike some operating systems, it is easy to guess VMS commands and useful information can be obtained by just typing HELP). Information is also given on the various pieces of sample environment equipment used on LAD. It is, of course, impossible to provide every piece of information that an experimenter on LAD could ever need. However, a good level of mutual respect between user and local contact will be maintained if efforts are made by the user to avoid asking questions which can be answered by "Look in the manual"!
